Style of riding: A man for the classics and still very fast.
Stuart is out of a cycling family where both his father an uncle competed at a high level.
In the beginning Stuart showed really good results on the track whit the silver medal in the 4000m team pursuit at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta he won the bronze medals in both the points race and team pursuit.
Stuart's road race career started when he joined the GAN team in 1995.
In 1998 he won his first Tour de France stage and was named Australian Cyclist of the Year.
In 2002 Stuart had to undergo surgery for a narrowing in the iliac artery but still managed to come back and have a strong season.
In 2004 Stuart moved to Confidis in order to concentrate on races such as Paris-Roubaix and the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Same year he won a stage in Tour de France, the HEW Cyclassics and an Olympic gold medal in Madison.
Stuart joined Team CSC, now known as Team Saxo Bank in 2005. Otherwise 2005 and 2006 was years of injuries for Stuart, but he came back strong in 2007. With his win in Paris-Roubaix Stuart became the first Australian to win a major classic.
In 2008 Stuart won the Herald Sun Tour on home soil and again made his mark on the classics without finishing on the podium.
Second in Tour Down Under and third in Tour of Ireland were Stuart's best results in 2009.
