| Rider Development Manager Bobby Julich |
 |
Country: USA
After 16 years as a professional rider on the international scene Bobby Julich decided to end his career in the summer of 2008 and this autumn he has been appointed Rider Development Manager for the Danish team, where he will be taking on a managing role with technical development, testing and time trial coaching as his main areas of focus as well as the training and development of new young riders. Bobby began his cycling career with the small Team Spago in 1992 at the age of 20 and things soon picked up in 1995, where he took the jump to Motorola - one of the major teams at the time. In 1996 Julich demonstrated his potential with a ninth place in Vuelta a España and an 11th place at the World championships and the following year he won Route du Sud and came 17th in Tour de France. His big break through came in 1998, where Julich won Criterium International followed by the biggest result in his career - a podium spot in Tour de France, where only Marco Pantani and Jan Ullrich beat the then 26-year-old American. Naturally Julich was among the favorites in the 1999 edition of the race but a crash during the first long time trial blew him out of the race and he never quite regained his status as a favorite in the Tour. Things started going down hill the following year and Julich has never made a secret of the fact that he felt reborn, when he first signed with Bjarne Riis in 2004. During his first season with the team he won bronze in the time trial at the Olympics as well as his first victories since Critérium International in 1998 – a race he also won in 2005. A huge goal of his was also achieved in the shape of the overall victory in Paris-Nice in 2005, where he also won Benelux Tour. For several years Julich has said that he wanted to remain with the team till he decided to end his career, which happened in 2008, but luckily this is not goodbye – on the contrary!
Julich's teams throughout the career: Spago (92), Chevrolet (94), Motorola (95-96), Cofidis (97-99), Crédit Agricole (00-01), Telekom (02-03), Team CSC Saxo Bank (04-08).
